Gustave Courbet is the chief representative of French Realism. Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Velázquez and the Venetian School were his teachers, develop a naturalistic style but adapted to the nineteenth century, depicting scenes of everyday life, portraits, nudes and landscapes.

Courbet openly participated in the Revolution of 1848, earning a reputation as an artist dangerous due to his attitude as for his painting. Always rejected the idealization of art, claiming it was only genuinely democratic realism, taking as models debiéndose farmers and workers.

By participating in the Paris Commune was jailed and fined, so he decided to go into exile in Switzerland in 1873. Had a significant influence on the Impressionist painters for his intransigence against the academic. In Switzerland, dedicated to performing, along with a host of collaborators, Swiss landscapes almost in series to the French state to pay the fine. It would be in Switzerland where he died in 1877 Courbet.

's no secret that the erotic work perhaps more "bold" in the history of painting could well be L'Origine du monde (The Origin of the World ), 1866, Courbet: a female, between open, close-up and lighting a box of 46 x 55 cm, now owned by the Musee d'Orsay, after a rambling illustrious history of successive owners.

Courbet painted many female nudes. But the most legendary and considered one of the most beautiful, could well be the great revelation of this exhibition: COACHING Femme nue (Nude woman lying , 1862, o / l, 75 x 95), inseparable from the L'Origine history of art collecting.

L'Origine was commissioned by Khalil-Bey, the last ambassador of the Ottoman Empire in Paris, which began installing the work in your bathroom. After many vicissitudes, sales and sale, L'Origine ended in another legendary collection, the dynasty's Hatvany in Budapest. There he crossed L'Origine and COACHING Femme nue, appearing today both work in a retrospective on the artist to be held in Paris.
